The Persistence of Memory
Observing this artwork I can see that this piece , has takes the view of a gloomy and eerie connection , For example the texture and shading added to this piece, creating a weird setting an unusual feeling given to the viewer, of cold dark space of time, continuing the strange effects of clocks adding the connection of strange and odd viewing from the clocks, and other objects within this painting, as well as the connection from drawings towards the title even,The painting creates one huge connection. There's no escape to reality, nothing seems striate forward, as you can see melting clocks, Big pieces of objects , grey human face. There's only a real sense of imagination, sights can only be seen and made up from the head. Salvador Dali only uses the use tool of imagination. Every thing is almost unreal you quite figure out what's going on. The use of color seems to be based on one solid color, Such as brown /gold earthly colors creating a unique look, maybe created so by the artist to for the viewer to focus his/hers attention towards the drawings and not the back ground, maybe to create an emphasis on the drawing , maintaining the connection of time e.g. melting clocks, the setting of day in the distance, gradually changing into night.
The texture of such piece seems to be solid and hard ,however which has feeling of an rough and strong edges, that may be uneven and bumpy in my opinion due to the materials , to create this piece for example oil paint, gives an uneven and hard edge when dried, it turns hard given the sense of the idea suggested. therefore painting may remain with an hard texture, looking bright and vibrant unlike a watercolor painting, were it would seem to be darker and less clearer, possibly added by Salvador for the painting to take on a vibrant effect, and to create an emphasis, on the actual drawings , for the drawing to show more , and for the viewers attention to head towards the drawings. e.g Melting clocks , human face, other overgrown orange bottle. In terms of the use of colors within this painting, mainly portrays the used colors of the secondary wheel than to primary wheel colors, Salvador may have done this for specific reasoning of, maintain an eerie and weird look, for the painting to keep within the boundary's of imagination and wonder, colors that you don't expect to see in reality/ real life, nothing but the odd and unfamiliar bases. The colors added helps gives a backing towards the style of artwork 'surrealism' , expressing a dark look and feature towards the painting, escaping the sense of simple doings and understanding, related work towards surrealism, therefore colors are mainly dull , dark, and colors that seem to escape the painting, adding a strange twist. The colors seem to be mainly linked to the mood of change and differ, any specific period of time in life or general doings that involves changing or growing of age , as the colors seem to be tertiary, a color that was create from a wide variety of colors, that the the colors included seems to gradually change towards a darken tone, from alight green to a dark, heavy muddy light green, similar to the different shades of the earthly colors. The colors Salvador Dali included within this painting, express a sudden motion of sadness and shallow mood and atmosphere. this may have been added to fit in with the certain style of the painting surrealism, to maintain the surrealist effects, from the simple to complicated understanding.
This painting seems to produce a simple pattern, a pattern that suggest less of a repeating style but a man-made view, and feeling that is seen in every setting and viewing, as the colors were created from mixture of colors made , therefore the pattern then seems man-made , the colors made to match and relate to one another. pattern is unnatural as most of the colors are are tertiary., A tertiary color is created form a mixture of secondary colors for its creation, however there some aspects of this panting, that seem natural and strange seeings as the skyline, the sunset and the main background, appears to show a vibrant glow on the white bay, such color seems to bright and glossy, this may have been produce due to the quality of the paints, during Salvador's century, the paints may have been created from the natural methods of the time.
